Caldwell County Economic Development Celebrates Industry at Banquet

LENOIR, NC — At this year’s Industry Appreciation Banquet, local leaders, businesses, and partners were recognized for their contributions to economic growth, community advancement, and workforce development.
Herman Anderson Award
The Herman Anderson Award was presented to Alan Merck for his long-standing impact on economic development and infrastructure improvement in the region. Merck joined Blue Ridge Energy in 2012 as Director of Key Accounts and Business Development and became Chief Operating Officer in 2018.
During his tenure, he helped guide 22 USDA Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant initiatives totaling more than $9 million in Caldwell County. These projects included a $1 million loan that supported Exela’s expansion from 50 to more than 600 employees. Merck also oversaw major system reliability upgrades, including the cooperative’s largest project at the Rutherwood Substation, and supported community investments benefiting organizations throughout the region.
Industry of the Year
Granite Falls Composites (GFC) was named Industry of the Year. GFC is a locally led manufacturer focused on preserving local jobs, producing Made‑in‑the‑USA materials, and supporting the surrounding community. Following a 2025 management buyout by Jamey Little and Melissa Curtis, GFC continues to provide reliable, high‑performance solutions for the fiber optic cable and composites industries. The company emphasizes technical expertise, consistent quality, and a family‑focused culture, upholding its commitment to deliver “strength in every strand.”
Partner of the Year
The North Carolina Railroad Company (NCRR), a private company whose sole customer is the State of North Carolina, was named Partner of the Year. The company provides infrastructure solutions and strategic investment programs to improve the state’s railroads. Since 2017, NCRR has awarded more than $74 million in economic development grants, creating 17,300 jobs across the state, and is a valued partner to Caldwell County Economic Development, supporting initiatives such as planning for the Northwest North Carolina Regional Economic Development Organization.
